The classroom was too quiet.
Too clean.
Too still.
Even before Coach Carter entered, the energy in the room felt different—like the calm before a storm that knew exactly when to strike.
Jaanvi was already seated, her massive binder of debate material open in front of her, pen tapping lightly against her notes. She'd barely slept the night before. The messages hadn't stopped.
But she was here. Prepared. Focused. Steady—at least on the outside.
Across the room, Aditya walked in, cool and unreadable as ever, but his eyes went straight to her seat.
Their gazes locked—just for a moment.
He nodded.
She nodded back.
And then—
The door clicked open.
Coach Carter entered, wearing a bright, practiced smile that looked so out of place on his usually hard-set face that the entire room went still.
"Good afternoon, team," he said cheerfully, his voice oozing warmth.
Jaanvi froze.
Aditya stiffened.
Siya, Saachi, and Ron exchanged puzzled looks.
Even Kayla—the actual weakest link—sat up straighter like she'd just been told the apocalypse was rescheduled.
Carter's smile stretched wider.
"Let's begin with a little praise today, shall we?"
No one spoke. That alone was strange.
Carter glanced around the room, eyes briefly skimming past Jaanvi's face before moving on.
"I've been so impressed lately. The progress. The passion. The way some of you are really stepping into your potential..."
He let the words dangle.
Jaanvi didn't blink, but her hands tightened in her lap.
Aditya tilted his head, just slightly.
And then Carter clapped his hands once, sharp and loud.
"So let's keep that momentum going! Today's going to be... fun."
Fun?
That word, in Coach Carter's mouth, sounded like a threat.
They split into mock debate groups.
Carter walked around the room like a shark circling the tank, watching, noting, smiling that unsettling smile.
He paused behind Jaanvi twice. Never said anything. Just stood there. Watching.
Every hair on her neck stood on end.
And then—
"Jaanvi," he said suddenly, voice smooth. "Can I see you for a moment?"
Her spine stiffened.
Everyone looked up.
Aditya's eyes narrowed.
"Alone, if you don't mind."
The room stayed frozen.
Aditya stood, casually. Too casually.
"I'll come too," he said, tone completely neutral.
Carter's smile faltered. "No need, Singh."
Aditya shrugged. "Still. I need to talk to you about the argument structure from Tuesday anyway."
A pause.
A flicker in the coach's expression—like the first crack in polished glass.
Then he nodded. "Fine. Both of you."
In the hallway, the air was colder.
Jaanvi folded her arms.
Carter leaned back against the wall like he was perfectly relaxed. "Just wanted to say, Jaanvi, your research packet from last week—stellar. Almost... too thorough."
Jaanvi blinked. "Is that a compliment?"
He chuckled. "Let's just say, for someone who's been under the weather, you've been producing some very interesting work."
Aditya stood at her side, silent. Watching.
Carter turned to him. "And Singh—you've always had promise. I've been thinking about your future. A bigger role on the team. More... responsibility."
Aditya said nothing.
Jaanvi's brows furrowed.
"You're both rising stars," Carter continued. "But this isn't just about skill. It's about focus. Discipline. Knowing your place."
The words hung there, heavy and calculated.
Jaanvi stared at him, cold realization crawling up her spine.
This wasn't praise.
This was a warning.
Thinly veiled. Drenched in condescension. A power play.
She met Carter's gaze evenly. "Is there a reason you're saying this now?"
He smiled again. "Just thinking ahead."
He turned and walked back into the classroom like nothing happened.
As the door clicked behind him, Aditya exhaled slowly beside her.
"That was messed up," he muttered.
Jaanvi nodded, not trusting her voice.
Aditya looked at her, jaw clenched. "Don't let him get in your head."
She gave him a sideways glance. "Already did."
He shook his head. "Then we get him out."
Their eyes locked again.
No teasing. No smirks. Just truth.
Aditya had never looked more serious.
And Jaanvi had never felt more... seen.
Back inside, Carter's tone had returned to its usual clipped edge, but the strange pleasantness lingered like a fog over the rest of practice.
The teammates sensed something was brewing, but no one could name it.
Only Jaanvi and Aditya knew.
And neither of them was about to back down.
Some threats are whispered in praise.
Some battles start with a smile.
And some threads only tighten in silence.
